Confluences of Philosophy, Science, and Technology:

On the First Decade of Mathematical Logic in Socialist China (the 1950s)

形式:线上讲座

活动内容摘要:

内容简介:

In the second half of the Republican Era (the 1930s-1940s), mathematical logic experienced immense growth within the Chinese academic world. Having found its first institutional backing in the context of Tsinghua University, mathematical logic gradually developed to become an integral part of, first, Chinese modern philosophical discourse and, subsequently, Chinese mathematics (the 1930s). In the years following the outbreak of war in 1937, the development of Chinese mathematical logic became profoundly obscured by the fog of warfare which enshrouded the Chinese academic community and gravely impeded its outward development. Nonetheless, regardless of the difficult circumstances, even in wartime the Chinese logicians kept advancing in pursuit of their studies. So, by the late 1940s, when the discipline re-emerged from the obscurity inflicted upon it by the prolonged period of warfare, the outlook of Chinese mathematical logic had already significantly changed. Not long afterward, a series of profound modifications in its academic status was caused by the ideological changes following the founding of the People’s Republic (1949). Although in the initial years of intense “Sovietisation”of Chinese political discourse, the life of mathematical logic in China seemed to have been extinguished completely, it continued to exist not only within the Chinese scientific/intellectual community but also in the ranks of leading members of the Party. Consequently, before the “Hundred Flowers Campaign”Chinese mathematical logic re-emerged in a brand-new form. In my lecture, I will address the three main developmental aspects of the new discipline of mathematical logic in the 1950s: its (1) philosophical foundations, (2) institutional developments, and (3) content-related advances. I will further try to cast some light on the interdependence or mutual entanglement of these three aspects in the Chinese mathematical logicians’reshaping of their science. Last but not least, I will also argue that a considerable part of the developmental trajectory of mathematical logic in the 1950s was underpinned by unique characteristics originating within China’s own path in intellectual modernization.
